What makes a light roast "light"?
Roast level is really about how long beans stay in the drum. Light roasts are pulled at or just after first crack, around 356–401°F (180–205°C), before the oils migrate to the surface. The result: dry, matte beans with higher acidity, more pronounced origin flavor, and (despite the myth) roughly the same caffeine as dark roasts.

How to choose the best light roast
A few things to consider while selecting a light roast coffee:
- Color and consistency. Beans should be uniformly light brown — not yellowish (underdeveloped) and not patchy.
- Freshness matters more for light roasts. Because fewer roast flavors mask staleness, buy beans roasted within the last 2–3 weeks. Look for a roast date, not just a sell-by.
- Origin-forward vs. blend. Single-origin light roasts (Ethiopian, Kenyan) emphasize distinct regional flavors. Light blends aim for balance.

Does light roast have less caffeine?
No — this is one of the most common coffee myths. Dark and light roasts contain nearly identical caffeine per bean. The difference comes from how you measure: by volume, light roasts (denser beans) have slightly more caffeine per scoop; by weight, they're essentially equal.
What flavors should I expect?
